The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system that was developed to determine a precise location almost anywhere on Earth. Today a constellation of 24 satellites orbits 12,000 miles above the earth transmitting signals to determine the location, speed and direction of the GPS receiver. What you need is an interface cable to your computer to download routes (=tracks) and waypoints to your GPS device. A GPS track is a series of points connected by lines of approx. 40-50 meters in length. A GPS waypoint is the latitude and longitude of a significant location such as a fork in the road, a peak, a hut etc. In addition to coordinates, a GPS waypoint contains a name (e.g. the name of a peak) and an icon. The amount of data and sense of safety that having a GPS offers makes it a great thing to have with you on your next ride.
